13. What are the common reasons for a claim not being accepted?

While we want to give you the best cover possible, no Home Insurance policy can cover every eventuality. We won’t be able to fulfil your claim if it’s for something that’s either not covered by or is excluded from your policy. Common reasons why this happens are:

  • You haven’t got enough cover. Make sure that any high value item of jewellery is specified on your policy or if you want cover while away from your home for the things you normally carry with you, make sure you have Personal Possessions cover. Remember, policies don’t always cover accidental damage so if you want to insure for this type of loss check that your policy is extended to provide Accidental Damage cover.
  • The claim is for something not covered by your policy. For example, claiming for general maintenance repairs as these can’t be covered by your policy. Remember, you’re only covered for the unexpected things that happen like a burglary, fire or flood
  • When something in your policy’s terms and conditions hasn’t been done. For example, make sure you tell the police about a theft straightaway, as you’ll need to give us their crime reference number before we can deal with your claim.

It’s always best to refer to your policy document for details, or ring our policy helpline on 01438 761 670.
