15. Together Mutual Insurance the small print explained
We know that 'small print' can sometimes have negative connotations – so much so that a Fairer Finance survey found that most people don’t even read it. So we hope that you don't think of your policy details as the small print!
Here's a look at some of the common misconceptions about the all-important policy information and why it's important.
“The policy booklet is just a list of ways that my insurer can get out of paying a claim.”
If you have had a bad experience with an insurance provider, it certainly may seem that way, but the policy document is an important opportunity for you to understand exactly what you've bought. It's there so you know what you are covered for during the time that your policy is valid and provides detail about what you're covered for and what you’re not covered for. It may not be the most stimulating read, but there are some useful nuggets in there.
For example, your belongings are only insured away from the home, if you have personal possessions cover. Or, you may assume that if your mischievous dog chews up your sofa cushions, you'll be able to claim for those. Unfortunately, that's not the case, but this is clearly explained in the policy booklet.
“Insurers don’t want us to read the detail.”
Honestly, that's not true - our underwriters (the people who write insurance documents) would really like customers to read it! Ultimately the small print is there to protect you - it's an opportunity for you to make sure you're happy with the cover you've purchased.
We know most people aren't as excited about insurance as we are, but making sure your home and contents have the right amount of cover is important so it's worth making sure you get it right.
